The quickest way to keep an idea on Apple Watch is to say it in one sentence and sort it out later. You can do that with apps already on your Watch, like Voice Memos, Reminders and Notes, or with a capture app like Drafts or Prod.
Here's how each one works, what it's good for, and where it falls short.
Because your wrist is closer than your phone. Ideas tend to turn up in the car, on a walk, mid-conversation or in the kitchen, when your phone is in a pocket or another room. Raising your wrist and speaking takes a few seconds, which is often all the time an idea gives you.
Open Voice Memos on your Watch, tap record, and say the idea. Recordings sync to your iPhone, iPad and Mac, where they appear under Watch Recordings.
Good for: getting the exact words down, tone and all, with no typing.
The catch: you're left with a list of recordings. To use an idea, you have to find the right one and listen back, which is easy to put off.
Raise your wrist and say something like “Remind me to call the printer about the quote.” Siri adds it to Reminders, which syncs through iCloud. You can also add a reminder in the Reminders app on the Watch.
Good for: ideas that are really tasks, like "call the printer about the quote".
The catch: a reminder turns an idea into a to-do before you've decided whether it's worth doing. Lists fill up with half-decided things.
Since watchOS 26, Notes is on Apple Watch. Open it and start a new note with the keyboard, or ask Siri to start one. On the Watch you can create, view and pin notes; Apple says to edit them on your iPhone, iPad or Mac.
Good for: people who already keep everything in Notes and want ideas there too. It's free and built in.
The catch: ideas end up mixed with everything else you've saved, and nothing brings them back. See Prod vs Apple Notes.
Drafts has a mature Watch app. You can capture a new draft by dictation, Scribble or keyboard, browse your Inbox and Flagged drafts, and flag, tag or archive them, with complications for capture. It works away from your iPhone, with some limits, and syncs later.
Good for: people who capture lots of text and want to send it on to other apps with Actions and automation.
The catch: it's a power tool. The best parts take some setting up, and some features need a subscription. See Prod vs Drafts.
Open Prod on your Watch (or tap its complication), tap Capture idea, then dictate, scribble or type, and tap Save. The idea syncs to Prod on your iPhone through iCloud and waits for your next review, where you make it Active, Pause it, Send it on or Archive it. Prod can also nudge you about an idea after a few days, so it doesn't go quiet.
Good for: ideas you want to keep separate from notes and tasks, and actually come back to.
The catch: on the Watch, Prod is for capture and a short list of ideas that need attention, where you can make an idea Active or Archive it. The full review and everything else happen on your iPhone. There's no Siri command on the Watch yet.
| If you want to… | Use |
|---|---|
| Keep your exact words, with no typing at all | Voice Memos |
| Turn a thought into a task with a date | Siri and Reminders |
| Keep ideas alongside your other notes | Apple Notes |
| Send captured text on to other apps | Drafts |
| Keep ideas apart, sort them later, and have them come back | Prod |
Whichever you choose, the habit matters more than the app: capture in one rough sentence, and look at what you caught once or twice a week.
Use an app with a complication on your main watch face, tap it, and dictate one sentence. With Prod, that's: tap the complication, tap Capture idea, speak, and tap Save.
Yes. Voice Memos records audio, Siri can create a reminder, and capture apps such as Prod and Drafts save text. A notes app is only one option, and not always the best one for ideas.
With Prod, yes, through your own iCloud account. Voice Memos, Reminders, Notes and Drafts sync to your iPhone too.
Yes. Capturing on Apple Watch is part of the free app. Prod Pro is an optional upgrade on iPhone and iPad.
An Apple Watch with watchOS 26 or later, and Prod on your iPhone. The Watch app installs alongside it. Prod is free on the App Store.
Prod is free on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch.
